A chained dog in a neighbourhood in Nova Scotia

Bring the dogs in, Nova Scotia was started in response to a dog freezing to death on the end of a chain in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia in February, 2010.

Somehow, even with regular intervention with visits from the NS SPCA because of complaints from people - a dog in Cape Breton still froze to death because his owners didn't feel the need to take him inside when it became too cold for their dog to be outside.  Why anyone would think that a short hair dog could survive in colder than -20 degree temperature overnight - is flabbergasting, to say the least.

And subsequent "necropsy" results published by the NS SPCA have proven to be inconclusive - saying that the dog was in good health - intimating that the SPCA and the dog owner were somehow not to blame for the dog's death - which is absolutely unacceptable.  The dog froze to death on the end of a chain - after multiple complaints.  Something was wrong.

Nova Scotia is like everywhere else in the world and has a problem with dogs being tied to stationary objects and being abandoned in back yards for their entire lives - given death sentences for no reason other than they have had the bad luck of having owners who have decided that for one reason or another they think it's a good idea to tie their dogs out 365 days a year 24 hours a day.

Dogs were not meant to live that way, and it is not necessary.  We need to give our animal control officers, and people in authority the tools to help dogs who are being abused in this way.

We are not saying that you cannot tie your dog out - you can even tie them out for hours at a time - but 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, is not necessary, or humane.  Bring your dogs inside, Nova Scotia.  It's 2010.  It's time.  No more dogs need to die on the end of a chain.  Please stop the suffering that's happening in your back yard.
